What Should Be Considered When Performing Circumcision

What is circumcision?

Circumcision is removing the foreskin, which surrounds the end part of the penis, called prepucium, from the relevant area by cutting it surgically in a certain shape and length and opening the end part the penis.

When should circumcision be performed?

Circumcision can be performed at any age; however, it is not highly recommended due to the psychological trauma it may cause, especially in children aged 3-6. In recent years, this period has been considered ideal because surgical application and post-operative care are much easier in newborn babies, the wound healing period is shortened, and it does not create psychological trauma.

Because children between the ages of 3 and 6 are in the formation period of their identities, and they may create incompatibility, circumcision is not recommended unless it is necessary in order not to create a psychological effect.

Who is circumcision practiced by?

Compared to the old health practices, circumcision is now performed by urology specialists, pediatric surgery specialists, or general surgery specialists.

Where and how is circumcision performed?

This surgical procedure, which has high importance in our society, will be the correct choice to be performed in a hospital environment, in operating room conditions. The circumcision procedure is performed with local and general anesthesia in many health institutions; however, recently, a consensus has been formed that the anesthesia method to be applied should also be general anesthesia, which is preferred. This method will both protect the child's mental health and shorten the healing process. Regardless of the conditions and age ranges in local anesthesia application, the child will experience great panic and fear due to the injection in his penis. For this period not to be remembered with fear by the child, the correct choice is general anesthesia.

What are the complications and inconveniences in the circumcision procedure?

During circumcision, permanent problems such as leaving the skin more or less, leaving bad scar tissue, bleeding, performing procedures that will cause deformity, damage to the urinary tract may occur, and infections may occur; having this application made by experienced names in this field will minimize complications.
