Causes and Methods of Treatment of Hydrocele
What is a hydrocele?
A hydrocele is a type of swelling in the scrotum that occurs when fluid collects in the thin sheath surrounding a testicle. It is especially common in newborn babies. In men, the scrotum in which sperm is stored is covered with a protective surface with a double layer and membrane structure. In order for the sperm to move easier and be more easily protected from external influences, there is a liquid present between the layers. This liquid is secreted by one of the layers, while it is absorbed by the other. In people whose process is normal, this phenomenon is balanced. In the case of balance disorder, an increase in the amount of liquid is observed between the layers and A filled sacculus develops as the scrotum swells. This vesicle formed is called a hydrocele.
What are the causes of hydrocele?
Hydrocele is evaluated under 2 topics: congenital (congenital) and adult hydrocele:
- Congenital hydrocele: During pregnancy, the testicles of babies are located in the abdomen. After the 14th week of pregnancy, it moves to the bottom of the abdomen and settles in the scrotum. The placement of the testicle in the scrotum is also accompanied by the peritoneum. In the period following the birth giving the sac form of the peritoneum turns into a filamentous state and closes. In the case of non closure of the sacculus; Intra-abdominal fluid enters through the existing orifice and accumulates around the testis. This phenomenon causes swelling that is called hydrocele.
- Hydrocele in Adults Hydrocele, which is usually seen in male individuals over the age of 40; is observed mostly due to radiotherapy, varicocele surgery, testicular tumor, testicular inflammation disorders and scrotum trauma. In about 70% of patients with kidney transplantation, unilateral hydrocele development can be observed.
How is hydrocele treated?
The expected time to see a childhood hydrocele is up to two years of age and If spontaneous recovery does not occur, surgical treatment is performed. During this procedure, also circumcision is often performed. For the treatment of hydrocele in adults, the preferred surgical procedure is approximately 30 to 60 minutes. After the procedure, drain is placed to the patient and patient is monitored for 24 to 48 hours. The patient can be discharged after removal of the drain, it is recommended to rest at home for several days after this treatment. In about 1 week, the stitches dissolve on their own and the patient can take a bath. During this period, care should be taken to use the recommended underwear for at least 7 days. After the procedure, painkillers and antibiotic therapy can be performed if it is deemed necessary.
